'Toxic' influencers trick men into thinking women are against them – Southgate

Sir Gareth Southgate has claimed that “manipulative and toxic influencers” are misleading young men into believing women are against them, just days after a court heard the murder of a killer who “approached” Andrew Tate the day before he killed three people.

The former England manager noted that many young people end up “looking for references” and filling the void with “new idols who don't care about their well-being”.

Crossbow and knife-wielding killer Kyle Clifford murdered his ex-girlfriend Louise Hunt, her sister Hannah Hunt and their mother Carol Hunt. His actions were reportedly inspired by “violent misogynistic propaganda” promoted by the notorious powerbroker Tate.

Southgate joined famous authors, actors, businessmen and members of the royal family to deliver the 46th Richard Dimbleby Lecture at the University of London, where he said some powerful people are “deliberately misleading young people into believing that success is determined by money or dominance”.

He noted: “As real-life communities and mentoring decline, young people end up withdrawing into themselves, unwilling to communicate or express their feelings.

“They spend more time online searching for guidance and are drawn to unhealthy alternatives such as gaming, gambling and pornography.

“And this void is being filled by a new type of role models who don’t have their best interests at heart.

“These are soulless, manipulative and toxic influencers whose only goal is their own gain.

“They are willing to deceive young people into believing that success is measured in money or dominance, without showing emotion, and that the world… including women… is against them.

“They are absolutely not the role models our young people need in life.”

Earlier, a spokesman for the UK prime minister said the home secretary was “committed to challenging people who promote harmful and hateful ideologies, including extreme misogynistic views.”

In Romania, the Tate brothers are charged with trafficking minors, sexual relations with minors and money laundering.

A separate case against them, in which they are accused of human trafficking and forming a criminal group for the purpose of sexual exploitation of women, was returned to the prosecutor's office.
