A British Air India plane crash survivor has shared the terrifying moments he watched people 'die before his eyes'.
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh told DD News: “I still can't believe that I am alive,” he said from his hospital bed on Friday.
The 40-year-old told the presenter that shortly after take-off he felt like the plane was “stuck in the air” and then green and white lights started flashing, adding: “It suddenly crashed into a building and exploded.”
A Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college on Thursday, turning into a fireball and killing all 241 people on board.
It is one of the deadliest air disasters in terms of UK fatalities and the first involving a 787 aircraft.
Speaking to DD News, Mr. Ramesh commented on the disaster: “I can’t believe I survived.
“For a moment I thought I was going to die too.
“But when I opened my eyes and looked around, I realized that I was alive.”
“I still can't believe I'm alive.”
Mr Ramesh was in seat 11A, next to one of the plane's emergency exits.
Describing the events before the incident, Mr Ramesh told the channel: “When the plane took off, for five to 10 seconds it felt like it was stuck in the air.
“Suddenly the lights started flashing – green and white.
“The plane did not gain altitude and simply glided before it crashed into the building and exploded.”
He added: “At first I thought I was dead.
“Then I realized I was still alive and I saw a hole in the fuselage.
“I was able to unbuckle myself, stick my leg through the hole and crawl out.”
Speaking about his survival, Mr. Ramesh said: “I don’t know how I managed to survive.
“I watched people die in front of me – flight attendants and two people I saw next to me… I crawled out of the wreckage.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site on Friday and was filmed talking to Ramesh at the hospital.
There are fears that the number of victims on the ground could rise.
The investigation into the causes of the disaster continues.
