This hypnotic ballad was constantly played at school dances in the late 1980s. No one knew who Black was, where he came from, whether he was a band or a solo artist. But the magical melody of “Wonderful Life” was captivating, informs Ukr.Media.
Behind the hit that conquered all of Europe was singer-songwriter Colin Virncombe, a native of Liverpool. Like many other young people in England in the late 1970s, he dreamed of musical fame. His first single, “Human Features,” was signed Black because Colin decided that no one would remember his last name.
After releasing a couple more unsuccessful singles, Colin Virncombe found himself without the support of labels. He was broke and could barely afford anything except bread and milk. Once, returning from the store, the musician wrote a bitterly ironic song called “Wonderful Life” in 10 minutes. At that time, he was going through a painful divorce and his mother's illness.
But the song became a global hit — and helped the musician get out of poverty.
“Wonderful Life” was recorded in a Liverpool studio for £300, released on Ugly Man Records and reached number 72 in the charts. Colin Virncombe was noticed by the reputable record company A&M. A contract was signed.
Black's first hit after signing with A&M was a reissue of “Wonderful Life.” The melancholic ballad reached number 8 in the UK charts and became an international hit. “Sweetest Smile” was later released, which was also a success. Black's debut album stayed on the charts for four months and sold one and a half million copies worldwide.
The albums “Comedy” (1988) and “Black” (1991) failed to repeat the success of his debut. Colin Virncombe was unable to fit into show business, as he did not seek to gain connections and provoke scandals. Later, he released a number of more records, recorded the album “The Accused” (1999) under his own name, worked with South African musicians in Johannesburg, wrote poems and paintings.
On January 26, 2016, Colin Virncombe died without regaining consciousness after a car accident in which he was involved on the way to Cork Airport.
