I have a friend Irina, with whom I visit various establishments. We met at work, she is a real good person, she herself received a higher pharmaceutical education. Ira, like many of us, was not always well versed in the intricacies of etiquette, but she studies them with interest. We decided to figure it out together, and I share our discoveries with you.
So, here are the main points that will help you feel more confident.
Bag
For example, I'm taking a restaurant, not a cafe. Most normal establishments have special stands for bags or hooks. A lady's bag should be placed on a stand or hung on a hook.
Small clutches can be placed on your lap. Putting a bag on the table, on a chair nearby is bad manners. Just like putting your mobile phone on the table during a meal. You can take it out, but don't demonstratively put it on the table, showing off your gadget.
Serve food
I always smiled when I heard that when you lean over a cup, plate, etc., you are serving them.
And then I saw it with my own eyes, how inelegant it looks when a lady, instead of raising her cup closer to her mouth, leans towards it. This applies to salads and soups. Do not lean towards the dish, you need to bring it to your mouth in small pieces using cutlery, sitting with a straight back. It may be difficult at first, but everything can be learned.
Glass
I myself really like to hold a glass, like in music videos — not by the stem. I always understood that television will not teach you good things. But we are in life, not in a music video, so glasses for wine, champagne and some cocktails should be held by the stem. This is done in order not to heat the drink with the warmth of your hand and not to leave fingerprints on the glass. Of course, this does not apply to glasses for water, juice or glasses without a stem.
At first it's uncomfortable and it feels like the glass is weighing you down and you're about to drop it. This will go away with experience.
Fork and knife
In many families, children are taught to use a fork and knife, but sometimes their understanding of when it is appropriate is limited. In fact, a knife and fork are used not only for meat. They are used to eat most foods that require cutting: poultry, fish (if there are no special utensils), pancakes, casseroles, omelets, some desserts and salads with large leaves. This is not only convenient, but also allows you to eat neatly.
Of course, there's no need to use all the utensils in the hope of appearing cultured. It's better to learn how to eat specific dishes in advance.
Move the chair.
If you have a man with you, then traditionally he can pull out your chair, if not, the waiter will do it. If you are sitting alone, just gently pull out your chair, sit down, and move it to a comfortable distance from the table. You don't have to sit right next to the table.
The main thing is to do it as quietly as possible. There is no need to attract the attention of people around you with this action. This will only show your rudeness.
And remember, the main thing in etiquette is respect for yourself and those around you, as well as the ability to feel relaxed and enjoy the evening.
