Decent detectives, unlike comedies and action movies, are released quite rarely. However, 2024 pleased with new releases. That is why for those who like to tickle their nerves, we have compiled a fresh selection of detective series – in it you can find titles with both a sharp plot and a friendly, cozy and sometimes funny atmosphere, informs Ukr.Media.
“True Detective: Night Country”
The fourth season of the cult series is “cold, dark and as feminine as possible.” This is assured by Issa Lopez, the new showrunner of the project, who wants to update it with her fresh look. Now the central figures are two female police officers, a track by Billie Eilish sounds on the screensaver, and the action is transferred to a non-existent mining town in Alaska, where the employees of the research station have disappeared. The heroine Jodie Foster is sure that they will not be found alive. The investigation has begun, and it is a real pleasure to follow its development.
“Murder in a Building” Season 4
The return of the Hulu crime comedy is, as always, fun, friendly, and atmospheric. It strangely enough, from the first episodes, it was created by amateur detectives while they were solving murders in their own high-rise luxury building. They were played, by the way, by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. In the fourth season, this legendary cast remained unchanged, but the location of the action changed – now the heroes will go to Los Angeles. There were hints of this move at the end of the third season, when the heroine Meryl Streep received an acting offer. Yes, the same Meryl Streep. It seems that no more words are needed, right?
“Monsieur Spade”
As the saying goes: a bad detective selection, lacking in old-school crime noir. And how good it is that Scott Frank, the creator of “The Queen's Move,” gave us such a necessary “Monsieur Spade.” Everything is classic here: France, the sixties, a small town, and the sudden mysterious death of six nuns. A retired private detective in a stylish “eloquent” hat takes on the case. According to one of the witnesses, he learns that the killer was looking for an Algerian boy in a monastery. Then the oddities will not decrease, all the threads will lead to this mysterious child. A child who has superpowers. Did they really mix a drop of mysticism into noir?
“The Rookie” Season 6
Who unites “The Rookie”, “Firefly” and “Castle”? That's right, Nathan Fillion. In his performance, John Nolan – “new” in the police department – instantly fell into the hearts of the audience. And here's why: according to the plot, John's life was turned upside down by an accident. He witnessed a bank robbery, forgot about his fear from shock and tried to start a conversation with the criminal, which made him feel like a hero for a split second. And although the attempt to “agree” did not lead to anything, the desire to save people in his soul only grew stronger. Because of him, John entered the police academy, where at forty he became the oldest among the cadets. But while everyone was joking about a midlife crisis, he proved his professional suitability. John has dozens of solved cases, and we feel that he will be replenished in the sixth season. In the meantime, let's recall how the fifth ended: an attack by masked bandits, after which not all the heroes survived.
Cross
“Cross” is an American crime thriller film created by Ben Watkins based on the Alex Cross series of novels written by James Patterson.
The story centers on Alex Cross, a Washington, D.C., detective and forensic psychologist who investigates complex crimes, trying to understand the motives of murderers and their victims. He is partnered with Detective John Sampson and supported at home by his grandmother Regina “Nana Mama” Cross. Together, they face dangerous criminals while trying to protect their community and loved ones.
It is worth noting that the series was renewed for a second season even before the premiere of the first, which indicates the creators' confidence in its success.
Under the post
“Under the Post” is an American true crime drama miniseries developed by Quinn Shepard, based on the book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey.
The series tells the true story of 14-year-old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), who went to meet friends but never returned home. Through the eyes of author Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough) and a local police officer (Lily Gladstone), viewers are immersed in the hidden world of young girls accused of murder, revealing shocking facts about an unexpected criminal.
