Such works are quite rare on my path, because usually, even if I like a book, I can drag it out. But there are also times when I can't wait for a free moment to immerse myself in history again. I will share a list of such books with you today!
Wilkie Collins “The Woman in White”
“The Woman in White” is a Victorian detective story. The work is written in a very unusual way for the 19th century. In the center of the plot are two girls who are very similar, and the detective story revolves around them. The novice artist Walter meets a mysterious stranger in white, and she looks exactly like one of his students. Having decided to solve this mystery, Walter finds himself drawn into a mysterious story.
The story is told from multiple characters, allowing us to see the story from different perspectives. Then the threads of the story tie together, and we see the whole picture.
Claire Pooley “True Story”
A book that I read without stopping, I wanted to watch the characters, follow the developments, I was curious about where it would all lead.
It all starts with the fact that an elderly artist decides to tell the whole truth about himself and writes his story in a notebook. He leaves this notebook in a cafe, a girl finds it and also decides to write her story in it. And so it turns out that everyone who has read the previous entries is looking for ways to help these people. As a result, their destinies begin to intertwine, everyone who has written their stories gets to know each other. We are shown how people are able to change the fate of another person if they are not indifferent.
In this book, the author raises quite serious issues: loneliness, feminism, the difficulties of motherhood, addiction to social networks. But on the other hand, it is written very easily, fascinatingly, and with humor.
John Fowles “The Collector”
Briefly about the plot: the main character falls in love with a girl and decides that the best way to achieve her love is to kidnap her and lock her in a basement. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is the diary of the kidnapper himself, and the second is the diary of the girl who is locked in the basement.
But the most interesting thing here is how the two worlds collide. The kidnapper is a completely empty person, and the girl is educated and intelligent. And the cherry on the cake in this work is its ending, where the main character, that is, the kidnapper, is revealed in all its glory.
Elena Ferrante “My Brilliant Friend”
This series of books is called the Neapolitan Quartet. Every time I finished reading one book, I immediately started another because it was impossible to put it down.
The author tells us about two friends who grew up in a poor area of Naples. Moreover, we observe their destinies, starting from childhood and ending in old age. This is a story about codependent friendship – the girls constantly competed, trying to outdo each other in everything, but at the same time could not live without each other.
Lina was brilliant, she grasped everything on the fly, she didn't have to make any effort to study better than everyone else. And Lena always tried to catch up with her, pored over textbooks day and night, she didn't get anything just like that. It was interesting to watch how their destinies developed, their paths sometimes diverged, then converged again, but they never forgot about each other, because they were connected forever.
