Information appeared in a number of American media outlets on November 20, stating that the project, working title “Squid Game: America,” is finally entering active production.
According to data published on the Film & Television Industry Alliance (FTIA) website, filming will begin on February 26 next year in Los Angeles and a number of other locations across California.
The main director of the project is David Fincher, and the producers include the creator of the original drama, Hwang Dong-hyuk, and Kim Ji-yeon, CEO of Firstman Studio.
The project is positioned not as a remake, but as a spin-off, existing in the same universe as the original series. Despite preserving the general concept, the American version is intended to show what the survival game format could look like in the US context.
Among the actors listed on the preliminary list is Cate Blanchett, who previously appeared in the third season of the original series. Collider notes that Fincher has not publicly confirmed the participation, but the published data is the most significant update on the project in recent months.
Hwang Dong-hyuk emphasized that the third season finale was not intended as a teaser for the American version, and at that time he was not tied to a spin-off. At the same time, the director did not rule out the possibility of returning to the universe if he received an official offer.
He also denied rumors that he would direct an American spin-off and denied reports that filming would soon begin. At the same time, the director admitted that he highly appreciates David Fincher's work and is ready to return to the project if he receives an offer.
David Fincher is considered one of Hollywood's most influential directors. His filmography includes Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac, and Benjamin Button, as well as three Oscar nominations for Best Director.
Netflix has not yet provided any official comments regarding the development of the American version.
