5 books recommended by Stephen King

Stephen King is the most popular modern author, his books are loved, they are read, new works are expected from the author. His novels are designed for a fairly wide audience – they are read by both the younger generation and older people. This author is so versatile, because completely different people are interested in his novels.

But today I'm not talking about his works – I want to share a selection of books that Stephen King himself publicly recommended for reading.

Liane Moriarty “Big Little Lies”

It all starts with the fact that the father of one of the students was killed at the school ball, but the author does not tell us who exactly. The intrigue is built… Then the events rewind six months back, and the author tells us about parents and their children who go to the same school. Each of the parents has a little secret that they keep quiet about.

The plot centers on 3 women: Celeste, who is married to a rich man, they are raising twins, but their marriage is not going smoothly; Madeleine is a woman with the excellent student syndrome, she has to have everything under control, she is overly sociable and positive; Jane, who recently moved to the town, a tragic situation happened to her in the past.

The author clearly knows how to sustain the intrigue until the very end. I didn't understand who would be the victim, who would be the murderer, what would happen in the last pages. Therefore, I recommend it to those who like novels with intrigue, mystery and an unexpected ending.

By the way, a TV series was made based on the book, which is not inferior to the original source.

Caroline Kepnes “You”

Joe Goldberg works in a bookstore, where he meets a budding writer, Beck, and instantly falls in love with her. But harmless courtship, attempts to please her turn into a frightening addiction, and the main character begins to follow the girl, control her every step, he removes any obstacle on the way to his chosen one. What else is Joe capable of for the sake of his love?

What's surprising is that while reading the book, you realize that the hero's actions are terrible, but you don't stop worrying about him and stay on his side until the very end.

The book has a sequel, and a TV series has also been made based on the novels.

David Mitchell “Hungry House”

David Mitchell invented his own world, and all of his novels take place in this world, so they are somehow connected to each other.

And now about the plot of the novel “The Hungry House”. There is an inconspicuous black door in the wall, behind it is a luxurious garden and a mansion – the same hungry house. Stable, once every 9 years, people enter this house and do not leave. What happens there? It is unknown.

The novel consists of five parts, the time interval between them is exactly 9 years, and the story in each part, except for the first, is told from the first person, that is, from those who enter the house. But in the fifth part, everything will be much more interesting.

The novel's action is cyclical, and in each new circle, details are added, information is layered on top of the existing one. The ending of the novel is open, meaning you can guess what happens next.

This work is not very scary, so if you want to read real horror, it's not about “Hunger House”. But it is a good mystery novel. So if you like mystery, you will like it.

Sarah Pinborough “In Her Eyes”

After reading this book, I was shocked and amazed. It all starts like a detective story inside a love triangle. Single mother Louise meets a charming man in a bar – David, who turns out to be her new boss, and he is also married. By chance, the main character meets David's wife – Adele. Louise understands that the woman loves her husband madly, but at the same time is unhappy with him, because he is a real tyrant who controls her every step. Louise and Adele become close friends. The main character understands that her friend is hiding something from her, and something terrible is happening in her marriage.

The ending of this book surprised me, I did not expect such an outcome at all, which, by the way, turned out to be mystical. I never understood whether I liked the novel or not, but it did not leave my head for a long time. Therefore, if you like unexpected, shocking endings, then this book is for you.

Shirley Jackson “The Haunting of Hill House”

The plot centers on an old mansion on top of a hill, where no one lives for a long time – people stay for a month at most and then leave. Dr. Montague decides to call his friends and colleagues to see what is happening in this house, conduct research and write a book about it. They spend several days there and, of course, the house surprises them – the layout of the mansion changes, various creaks and noises are heard. The disclosure of the characters' characters is interesting, because the house feels people's fears, brings them to the surface, showing the inside of each person.

The novel is not that scary, but you have to take into account that it was written quite a long time ago and is considered a classic, so you don't need to expect modern icy horror from it. For that time, it's a pretty decent thriller. So I also recommend it if you like mysticism.
