Saudi Crown Prince Speaking at Future Investment Initiative Conference

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has addressed the Future Investment Initiative conference in the kingdom’s capital Riyadh.

On Death of Saudi Journalist Khashoggi

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman described on Wednesday the case of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi as “painful” for all Saudis, stressing that this heinous crime cannot be justified.

“This crime was really painful to all the Saudis and I believe it is very painful to all the humans. It is a heinous crime that cannot be justified. Today Saudi Arabia is carrying out all legal things to finalize the investigation to finalize and work with the Turkish government and present the perpetrators to the court and take the judgment,” bin Salman said at the Future Investment Initiative forum in Riyadh.

Speaking further, the crown prince described cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Turkey on the investigation of the Khashoggi murder as “unique” and stressed that the expected rupture of ties between Riyadh and Ankara will never happen.

“Undoubtedly the cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Turkey is unique. I know that many are trying to use this painful thing to drive a wedge between Saudi and Turkey. I want to send them a message- they will not be able to do this… this wedge will not happen and we will prove to the world that two governments are cooperating that all perpetrators are taken to court,” bin Salman said.

Khashoggi, known for his criticism of Saudi policies, had been working as a columnist for The Washington Post. The journalist was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Following more than two weeks of denials, Saudi Arabia admitted on Friday that the journalist had been killed in a brawl inside the consulate in Istanbul. According to Riyadh, 18 people have been arrested over their involvement in the incident. Turkey is conducting a separate investigation into the journalist’s death.

The Future Investment Initiative conference, dubbed Davos in the Desert, was launched Tuesday. Its opening was marred by Saudi Arabia’s role in the murder of its critic and columnist Jamal Khashoggi, with big names dropping out in protest.
