Irish Data to investigate X's Grok AI tool

Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) has launched an investigation into the Grok artificial intelligence model running on social media platform X.

This investigation will assess the processing of personal data contained in public messages on X from EU users for the purpose of training generative artificial intelligence models, in particular Grok large language models (LLMs).

The DPC said in a statement: “The investigation will examine compliance with a number of key aspects of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), including the lawfulness and transparency of data processing.”

Grok is a collection of artificial intelligence models developed by xAI.

These models are used to power the generative AI query tool available on Elon Musk's X platform.

The DPC noted: “The purpose of this investigation is to determine the lawfulness of the processing of this personal data for the purpose of training Grok Masters of Laws.”
