A Game for Two: A Look Into Russia's Draft Response to US Sanctions

After the United States imposed a new round of sanctions against Russia because of his alleged “adverse” action in the world, Moscow is now thinking about how to return the favor.

The Russian Parliament is expected to consider the recently proposed bill put forward by group of deputies in response to economic sanctions imposed by the United States, with a hearing scheduled April 16.

The proposed punitive measures include restrictions on imports from the United States, such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs and agricultural products; the imposition of restrictions or a total ban; the ban of certain US citizens for entry into Russia; restrictions on employment opportunities for U.S. citizens and/or residents of certain other countries; suspension or termination of international cooperation between U.S. and Russian companies involved in nuclear power engineering, aircraft and rocket engine; and price increases for air navigation service for U.S. aircraft.

These counter-sanctions can be implemented by the government on behalf of the President and cancelled after a similar procedure.

On 6 April, the US Treasury Department added 38 Russian entrepreneurs, high-ranking officials and companies to sanctions list in response to in response to what she described as “malicious acts” of Russia around the world. In the list of Russian officials, Minister of internal Affairs Vladimir Kolokoltsev, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev and entrepreneurs Oleg Deripaska, Suleiman Kerimov and the Chairman of the Board “Gazprom” Alexey Miller.

The Russian foreign Ministry warned that this act will not remain unanswered, and advised Washington to “get rid of illusions” about the opportunity to play in Moscow with “language of sanctions”.
