To painlessly accept the fact that autumn is approaching its finale and an endlessly long winter awaits us, we suggest taking a course of film therapy with 6 films. Choose from a selection to laugh your heart out, cry your eyes out for years to come, and admire idealistic landscapes with fallen leaves. The list includes dramas, comedies, and rom-coms in the plot of which autumn takes a direct part. And sometimes it's useful to know that someone else's autumn is worse than yours.
“Autumn in New York” 2001
It would be strange to start an autumn list with any other film. Richard Gere, Winona Ryder, strong feelings of people who are not destined to be together, an incurable disease – and all this against the backdrop of autumn New York landscapes. For almost two hours, the director will put intense pressure on your tear glands and pull out the most secret complexes. During this time, you will die, be reborn, realize that you dream of going to live in New York, and in the end decide that your autumn is not so bad after all.
“Sweet November” 2001
A film that you should watch at least once in your life. The most cozy melodrama with Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron in the lead roles. The plot centers on a successful advertising agent, Nelson Moss. One day he meets the unusual and eccentric Sarah Deaver, who turns his life upside down. You already know how it will end, but watching the film on a rainy autumn evening will not be out of place.
“Come in September” 1961
A romantic comedy starring Gina Lollobrigida and Rock Hudson. The film is over 50 years old, and it seems that no one has ever managed to come up with something funnier about relationships. Insanely beautiful actors, equally incredible landscapes, insanely funny jokes await you – and in general, “Come in September” should be prescribed as a cure for autumn depression. And don't be confused by the fact that the film takes place in the summer – September still decides everything here!
“Autumn Sonata” 1978
A complex story about the relationship between a mother and daughter, which received two Oscar nominations, one Cesar Award, and won the Golden Globe in the Best Foreign Film category. In principle, the fact that the drama was directed by Ingmar Bergman should be enough to find the film tonight and watch it in proud solitude. The action of the film, as you might guess, takes place in autumn, which, however, is not just a time period of the year, but also the general mood experienced by the main characters, entangled in relationships with each other and loved ones. By the way, the mother and daughter were played by Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann. You will definitely cry.
“House by the Lake” 2006
Can a drama with Keanu Reeves be bad? Of course not, especially if Sandra Bullock is paired with him. At first glance, the main characters of the film are connected only by the house in which she already lived, and he is just starting to live. They start a correspondence, which reveals one very strange moment: it turns out that Reeves lives in 2004, and Bullock in 2006. The film takes place over several months, including autumn. The landscapes with fallen leaves from this film are classics. Critics urge not to try to logically comprehend what is happening in the film, but to surrender to it emotionally, only then you can get real pleasure from watching.
“September” 1987
The director himself calls the film a failure: he reshot it twice with different actors and in different locations and was about to take on it a third time when he realized that he was close to a nervous breakdown and that a new attempt would not change anything. If we talk about box office, then the drama is the leader here, but, admittedly, from the end. Woody Allen's most flopped film was not, but it is still worth watching. The audience who still made it to the cinema, and those critics who saw it, sing their praises in unison. The director was inspired to create the film by Anton Chekhov's play “Uncle Vanya” and Mia Farrow's house in Connecticut. And if Allen was not satisfied with the execution, he really likes the script and the story itself: the company comes to a country house at the end of summer, a love triangle arises, which eventually leads to a dramatic denouement. It is impossible to think of a better film for a rainy autumn evening.
