The chip manufacturer Nvidia is preparing to inject as much as $100 billion into OpenAI and will equip it with chips for data centers, as stated by the firms on Monday. This alliance unites two of the most distinguished figures in the global arena of artificial intelligence advancement.

As part of the arrangement, Nvidia is set to commence chip deliveries possibly by the close of 2026. According to a source familiar with OpenAI, the agreement encompasses two distinct, yet interconnected, transactions. OpenAI will disburse funds to Nvidia for the chips, while Nvidia will allocate capital to OpenAI, securing a stake without wielding controlling power, as indicated by the source.

Nvidia’s initial expenditure of $10 billion in OpenAI, which was recently valued at $500 billion, will occur following the establishment of a conclusive agreement between the firms concerning the acquisition of Nvidia’s chips by OpenAI.

Previously, Nvidia had provided OpenAI with $6.6 billion in funding. The creator of ChatGPT committed to transferring 49% of its earnings to Microsoft post a $13 billion investment in 2023. Presently, OpenAI is undergoing a complex and greatly disputed transition into a profit-driven enterprise.

The companies have revealed a letter of intent regarding a significant strategic cooperation aimed at implementing a minimum of 10 GW of Nvidia chips to bolster OpenAI’s infrastructure for artificial intelligence.

“It all hinges on computing power,” remarked Sam Altman, the Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, within a press statement. “Computational infrastructure will act as the bedrock for the forthcoming economy, and we plan to leverage our endeavors with Nvidia to pioneer groundbreaking advancements in AI and disseminate them to individuals and businesses extensively.”

Altman previously stated that his firm encounters limitations due to the availability of computing capacity, most frequently assessed by the count of graphics processing units (GPUs), which empower artificial intelligence products to fulfill user requests.

The firms are projected to conclude the particulars of their alliance in the ensuing weeks, with the initial implementation phase scheduled to commence in the latter portion of 2026.
