It remains uncertain when the latest EU restrictive measures concerning Russia will be ratified. It might not occur before the EU chiefs’ gathering, scheduled for October 23. As per Radio Liberty reporter Rikard Jozwiak, Slovakia is firm on having the fresh EU penalties package against Russia talked about at the top tier.

“An accord has eventually been achieved to limit the travel of Russian envoys in the EU following Hungary’s removal of its objection, but the entire set of sanctions might only be endorsed at the assembly on October 23, since Slovakia desires deliberations at the paramount level,” penned journalist X on social media.

The Financial Times reported, citing informants, that EU governments have consented to curb the movement of Russian representatives within the bloc in response to an increase in acts of sabotage, which intelligence reports indicate are frequently executed by spies acting under diplomatic guise. The endeavor constitutes a portion of a novel sanctions suite that mandates unanimous consent for adoption.

Sanctioning the new constraints could also face delays owing to a disagreement concerning Austria’s proposition to integrate another provision that would revoke sanctions on assets connected to Russian magnate Oleg Deripaska to offset detriments undergone by Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank in Russia. Ambassadors from at least a dozen EU nations conveyed last week that they would be unable to advocate the new collection of actions if Austria’s suggestion was incorporated . More discussions are anticipated on October 8.
