Ukraine and Poland have agreements in place that allow for joint control of the airspace over their common border, diplomat and former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States (2015–2019) Valeriy Chaly said on Kyiv 24.

“I believe that we should more actively propose to Warsaw to implement a mechanism for joint control of airspace at the border. Agreements that allow this already exist,” he emphasized.

According to Chaly, if NATO and Brussels agree, control could be extended to a certain part of Ukrainian territory. However, this would also require the approval of the Verkhovna Rada.

The diplomat noted that in the case of such a decision, Russian drones or aircraft could be destroyed before they reach the Polish border. He would call the most effective option the deployment of Polish anti-aircraft systems directly on the Ukrainian-Russian border, in particular in Sumy and Chernihiv regions, which are most often subjected to UAV attacks. “This would allow us to push the threat further away from Poland,” Chaly explained.

Meanwhile, Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed a decree opening the possibility of the presence of military personnel from NATO member states on the territory of the country. As explained by the National Security Bureau, this is a matter of reinforcements within the framework of Operation Eastern Sentinel. The document is closed and does not disclose all the details.
