British actress Megan Prescott, best known for her role as Katie Fitch in the television series “Milksuckers,” revealed on Instagram that she was diagnosed with autism in December 2021, Ukr.Media reports.
The star admitted that pretending to be neurotypical left her “exhausted, anxious and depressed.” The actress added that she still hasn’t told some family members about her autism, fearing that their reaction would be “quite upsetting.”
Megan explained how some people downplay her diagnosis, as if it's “no big deal because it's something everyone goes through and you just don't deal with it that well.”
“Autism is not a 'superpower.' We live in a society built from the ground up for people with neurotypical brains. I believe autism can be a 'gift' if the world we live in is made accessible to neurodiverse people. Almost all the structures, systems, and social 'rules' we live by were created by and for neurotypical people and fail to take into account the vast differences in how neurodiverse minds work,” Megan wrote.
The actress stated that more needs to be said about autism in women, explaining this by the fact that most of the “diagnostic criteria used to assess autism are based on studies conducted exclusively on men.”
“In my true style, I'm going to be talking a lot about this, of course; partly because I'm incredibly self-centered, but also because there's a lack of information and support for autistic women, and I'd like to at least add my two cents,” Prescott admitted.
