  • Ipswich v Sheffield United (Friday, 8pm) – Live on Sky Sports Football from 7.30pm

The match has not started as well as either side would have liked. Ipswich are yet to win, having drawn three and lost one, while Sheffield United are rock bottom of the table, having lost all four.

Two pre-season promotion hopefuls are set to begin their campaigns at Portman Road when the Championship returns after the international break.

David Prutton's prediction from the Sky Sports Essential EFL podcast:

Ipswich have not started well, but Sheffield United have been even worse. They have shown flashes of quality but they have been too inconsistent and the change of manager has not made an impression on them. His performances in front of the fans away at Middlesbrough were astonishing. Having spoken to him, I can see how focused he will be on getting things right, but I hope that moments like these do not come back to haunt him.

The fans' anger is understandable given the results, but the players and fans are in different moods at the moment. Ipswich, on the other hand, can rely on Kieran McKenna, who knows what it takes to get out of the Championship. Their progress may be slower, but they trust him. So there are similarities between the two clubs, but there are also significant differences. Ipswich will win 2-0.

  • Southampton v Portsmouth (Sunday, 12:00) – Live on Sky Sports Football from 11:00

This should be great. A proper reunion, and it won't be a happy one. It's six years since south coast rivals Southampton and Portsmouth met, and a full 13 years since they last played in the league.

When they met in the League Cup in 2019, they were in the Premier League and League One. Now they are level, with Pompey ahead of the Saints in the table. It will be a heated encounter.

David Prutton's prediction from the Sky Sports Essential EFL podcast:

This is one of the most important matches we have ever covered in the English Football League. If you are even slightly familiar with the game, you will know that it is always a tense affair. The two clubs hate each other with a passion, which makes the derby a fierce, often brutal and exhausting affair.

“It's certainly one of the most intense games I've ever been involved in. Everyone talks about the biggest games in England and we all know which ones are the most famous, but Southampton v Portsmouth is unique. The location and the historical significance make it special.”

“This is a venomous rivalry, one of the most heated you could hope for, and I think this match has all the ingredients to be a real spectacle. 2-2.”
