Polish President Karol Nawrocki said that there are currently no conditions for Ukraine to join NATO, and he considers discussions about its accession to the European Union premature. The reaction to his words was published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
In an interview with the Lithuanian publication LRT, Navročki called Russia a constant threat to Poland and Lithuania, but stressed that due to the state of war, Kyiv cannot obtain NATO membership. According to him, this would automatically involve the allies in military action. Regarding prospects in the EU, he said that such talks should be postponed, since “the time has not yet come.”
“Today's discussion about Ukraine's membership in the European Union is premature and, as I have already said, I, as the President of Poland, do not participate in such discussions and am more focused on what Poles will do from 2022,” said Nawrocki.
At the same time, the Polish president emphasized that Warsaw has been actively helping Ukraine since February 2022 and still supports Ukrainians. He also touched on the topic of the Volyn tragedy, calling it a “massacre” and demanding that the memory of the victims be honored. In 2025, the exhumation of the dead with the participation of Polish specialists has already begun.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded that the country's security future is directly linked to NATO, and its political and economic future is directly linked to the EU. They emphasized that Ukraine's accession to both alliances is the key not only to its defense, but also to the stability of all of Europe and the Euro-Atlantic space.
Ukrainian diplomacy emphasized that discussing Kyiv's membership in NATO and the EU is a strategic necessity against the backdrop of ongoing Russian aggression. This position, the Foreign Ministry recalled, has been repeatedly confirmed by partners, including Poland, at the level of decisions and official statements.
“We proceed from the understanding that Ukraine's security future is inextricably linked to NATO, and its political and economic future is inextricably linked to the European Union. In addition, the member states of the Coalition of the Willing recently agreed that Ukraine's membership in the EU is one of the security guarantees for Ukraine. At the same time, it is important to realize that Ukraine's membership in these alliances is a guarantee of security not only for Ukraine, but also for the entire Europe and the Euro-Atlantic community. This is not an exaggeration, but modern realities,” the Foreign Ministry reported.
Previously, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine's accession to NATO was unlikely due to opposition from the United States, Germany, and Hungary.
