Highlights from Carlos Alcaraz vs. Novak Djokovic's US Open semifinal

Carlos Alcaraz withstood all the punches from Novak Djokovic to reach his second US Open final and deny the 38-year-old a record 25th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic went into the match hoping to overcome a 16-year age gap in his fourth Grand Slam semi-final this season, but the Spaniard prevailed 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.

Jannik Sinner set up a huge final against Alcaraz after a hard-fought 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime in which he had to fight back to record his 300th career win.

It will be the first time in Open history that the same two players have reached three major finals in one season.

Novak Djokovic admits the world's top two players Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are too strong in the best-of-three match but vows to keep fighting for Grand Slam titles after exiting the US Open in the semi-finals.

For Alcaraz, it was revenge for his losses to Djokovic in the Olympic gold medal match and in the Australian Open quarterfinals. He said: “It's an amazing feeling. To be in the final of the US Open again is amazing.”

“It means a lot to me. I would say it wasn't the best level. I served very well today, I think that was very important.”

Alcaraz completes class rally against Djokovic during their US Open semifinal match

There was certainly excitement surrounding the competition, as stars visiting Arthur Ashe included actor Hugh Jackman and singer Jon Bon Jovi.

The Spaniard began by immediately breaking Djokovic's serve in the first game, but despite the poor start, Djokovic seemed to relish the challenge.

The crowd cheered as he sent a backhand pass down the line past his opponent but was unable to truly threaten the 22-year-old's serve.

Carlos Alcaraz 🆕

Both players made more mistakes than they would have liked, and a poor start to the second set by Alcaraz allowed Djokovic to extend his lead to 3-0.

But the Serb's serve was not the weapon he needed and Alcaraz soon levelled the score, leaving Djokovic hanging his head after sinking a backhand on break point in the fifth game.

He held firm until the tiebreak and made the crowd believe he had won by winning two points in a row on Alcaraz's serve, but that only reduced the deficit to 4-3 and he was soon two sets behind.

Watch Djokovic's stunning line-winning shot against Alcaraz…

During the changeover, Djokovic called for a trainer to massage his neck and right shoulder (not the first time this tournament) and was left in even more trouble when two double faults allowed Alcaraz to break for 3-1 in the third set.

The Spaniard was simply too strong and too young for Djokovic, and the end came quickly.

Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows three years ago and is now looking to win his sixth title and second of the season.

Djokovic has said he wants to continue his pursuit of Grand Slam titles in 2026, saying: “In the future, it will be very difficult for me to overcome the barrier of Sinner and Alcaraz in best-of-three matches, in best-of-three matches I have more chances.”

“In this regard, I am not giving up on the Grand Slam tournaments. However, I will continue to fight and try to reach the final, to fight at least for the trophy, but it will be a very difficult task.”

Sky Sports tennis team looks at why Djokovic struggled against Alcaraz…

Sky Sports' Ryan Harrison on Alcaraz's win over Djokovic:

“Carlos didn’t play his best match but he won in three sets, which speaks volumes about the level of improvement he’s had over the last couple of years – even in the last nine months before he lost to Djokovic in Australia.

“It looks like Carlos has taken the next step. He heard people around him saying that he was not in the best shape at the beginning of the tournament.

“He plays well, serves incredibly well after some adjustments.

“After Novak left the field at the end of the match, we have a lot to think about.

“He didn't seem confident he would see this court again.”

Changing of the guard?

Harrison added: “It's a sign of the changing of the guard when Carlos says he didn't play his best match but still won in three sets.”

“Carlos was just being honest and he knows he will have to play better in the final if he faces Sinner as we expect.

“Novak is firmly in third place and seems to be getting further and further away from his goal.”

Navratilova: Getting old is disgusting!

Sky Sports' Martina Navratilova on Djokovic:

“Getting old as a tennis player is terrible. I've been through it. The effort is the same, the feeling is the same, you play at the right moment and miss it, although 10 years ago you could have done it with your eyes closed.”

Robson: Alcaraz's physical strength was key to victory

Sky Sports' Laura Robson on Alcaraz taking charge of the team:

“Novak couldn't get a look at Carlos' first serve, which was always key. Alcaraz dominated.

“Carlos later spoke about the need to play the match in a tough manner, and Novak showed weakness at the end of the second-set tie-break.”

Sinner and Alcaraz to meet in US Open final:

Alcaraz leads the head-to-head record 9-5.

Their last meeting took place in Cincinnati last month, when Sinner was forced to resign due to illness.

Highlights from the semi-final match between Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime at the US Open.

Alcaraz will now face defending champion Sinner, who has reached his fifth consecutive Grand Slam final.

Sinner's victory over Canada's Auger-Aliassime means he has become just the eighth player ever to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a season, and the youngest in the Open Era, while his 27-match winning streak on hard courts at Grand Slams equals Djokovic's best and is now surpassed only by Federer.

With Alcaraz winning in Paris and Sinner at Wimbledon, the stakes in Sunday's final could not be higher, and the winner will not only secure the title but also leave New York as the world number one.

Sinner, who is looking to win a fifth Grand Slam title overall and a fourth in his last five Grand Slams, said: “It's been an amazing season, for sure. The Grand Slams are the most important tournaments and to be in the final again, in front of an amazing crowd, it couldn't be better.”

Today was a very tough match, but of course I am very happy. Let's see what happens next. Sunday will be a special event. We know each other very well.

Sinner won the first set, but Auger-Aliassime found himself in the purple zone in the second set, which even the Italian could not cope with and fight back.

Sinner's problems included physical discomfort, and the 24-year-old was forced to leave the court due to stomach problems caused by medical reasons.

Auger-Aliassime was unable to maintain his phenomenal level and midway through the third set, errors suddenly crept into his game and Sinner raced into a 4-2 lead before serving for the set.

Had Sinner's desperation backhand on break point in the fourth game of the fourth set not hit the outside line – to the complete amazement of his opponent – the match might have gone differently, but the top seed fended off the danger, broke in the next game and won again.

Commenting on the injury issue, Sinner added: “I just felt a little twitch after my serve when I was serving there in the second set at 4-3. After the treatment I felt a lot better.”

“At some point I stopped feeling anything. I started serving at a normal pace again, so everything was fine. Nothing to worry about.”

Sinner became the FOURTH man in the Open Era to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a single season:

Rod Laver – 1969

Roger Federer – 2006, 2007, 2009

Novak Djokovic – 2015, 2021, 2023

𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐤 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 – 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓

He is the youngest person to EVER do it.
