Germany is planning to fund a massive expansion of Ukraine's air force. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will outline concrete plans for security guarantees on Thursday, including a commitment to arm five new brigades, The Telegraph reports.

Der Spiegel indicated that Berlin is proposing to increase Ukraine's air defense capabilities by 20% annually, as well as cooperate on Ukrainian-made cruise missiles.

The five brigades will be equipped with 480 infantry fighting vehicles, which will be delivered annually. However, Berlin has not yet made any commitments to send troops to monitor any future ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

Merz previously stated that the war in Ukraine could last a long time. According to the head of the German government, wars end either with “military defeat of one of the sides,” which neither Moscow nor Kyiv are close to now, or with “economic and/or military exhaustion,” which is also not observed now.
