The JS Energy Europe plant in Konin, which was until recently owned by the British company Johnson Matthey, has been taken over by a Chinese company that is now starting an investment there related to the production of batteries for electric cars.

As Paweł Adamów, deputy mayor of Konin, told Radio Poznań, several hundred people will find work in the modernized facility.

– This entire year will be devoted to reconstructing the factory in such a way as to adapt it to the technology that the Chinese investor will use – says Paweł Adamów.

Ultimately, up to 800 employees

According to the deputy mayor of Konin, production is expected to start next year .

The first phase is expected to employ approximately 300 people. Currently, the company already employs 50. Ultimately, in subsequent phases, the investor would like to employ up to 800 people, ” said Paweł Adamów.

The company is expected to employ specialists in production, maintenance, logistics, finance, and IT, among others. Recruitment for these positions has already begun.

Full infrastructure will facilitate investment

According to the investor, the modernized facility has a large production area and full infrastructure, including factory, laboratory, and support buildings, as well as complete environmental assessment procedures, which could significantly accelerate construction progress.

A photovoltaic farm is also planned for construction next to the plant. A city bus service will soon be available.

Another approach to battery production

British company Johnson Matthey began construction of a battery materials factory in Konin in 2019. However, it suspended the project two years later. In 2024, Chinese company Ningbo Ronbay New Energy Technology announced that it had finalized the acquisition of the facility, which will be managed by JS Energy Europe, a subsidiary of the Chinese company.
