For many of us, spending time at the beach is one of the most memorable moments of the summer. The cover of the August 25, 2025 issue, created by artist Sergio García Sánchez and his wife, colorist Lola Moral, is based on a completely different feeling. “As a child, I was extremely bored at the beach, so I spent all day thinking of things to do to escape the monotony of lying in the sun,” García Sánchez said.

García Sánchez teaches at the University of Granada, where many of his students get tattoos; some learn the technique as part of their courses. The images in this photo are known as “American Traditional” and are inspired by Norman Keith Collins (1911–1973), the famous Hawaiian artist better known as Sailor Jerry. “Sailor Jerry created an extremely powerful iconography that continues to exist thanks to the creative efforts of new generations of tattooists,” García Sánchez said.
