Tottenham Hotspur players have expressed “disgust” after striker Mathis Thel was subjected to racist abuse on social media following their UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
Tell failed to convert a penalty in the shootout, which Tottenham lost 4-3, despite holding a 2-0 lead until the final minutes of the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw after regular time.
The France Under-21 international, whose loan from Bayern Munich was made permanent for £30million in June, faced abuse after missing the target.
Tottenham released a statement: “We are appalled by the racist abuse Mathis Thel has received on social media following yesterday's UEFA Super Cup defeat.
“Mathis showed courage and bravery by stepping forward and taking responsibility for the penalty, but those who insult him are just cowards hiding behind anonymous nicknames and profiles to spew their disgusting opinions.
We will work with the authorities and social media to punish as severely as possible anyone whose identity we manage to establish. We support you, Matis.
Tottenham led 2-0 until the 85th minute at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy, thanks to goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, before Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos scored to level the scores late on.
