Elon Musk says he plans to sue Apple for not including X and Grok among top apps

SpaceX, Tesla and X billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to sue Apple for failing to include X and its AI app Grok as featured apps in the App Store.

Late Monday, Mr. Musk posted a message on X, saying: “Hey @Apple App Store, why are you refusing to include X or Grok in the “Must Have” section when X is the #1 News App in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Do you take a stand? What is the goal? Inquiring minds want to know.”

Grok is owned by Mr Musk's xAI startup, which develops artificial intelligence technologies.

Mr Musk added: “Apple is behaving in a way that no AI company other than OpenAI can achieve the #1 spot in the App Store, which is a clear violation of antitrust laws. xAI will take immediate legal action.”

He did not disclose further details.

Apple, which has faced multiple antitrust allegations in recent years, has yet to comment on the situation.

A judge recently ruled that Apple violated a court order in an antitrust case brought by Fortnite developer Epic Games.

In April, the European Union fined Apple €500 million (£431.8 million) for breaking antitrust rules by banning app developers from offering users better deals outside the App Store.

Last year, the EU fined the US tech giant almost $2bn (£1.4bn) for giving an unfair advantage to its own music streaming service by banning rivals such as Spotify from notifying users how they could pay for cheaper subscriptions outside of iPhone apps.

As of Tuesday morning, the most popular app in Apple's App Store was TikTok, followed by Tinder, Duolingo, YouTube and Bumble.

OpenAI's ChatGPT ranked 7th.
