Tanaiste to hold talks with Northern leaders on US trade deal

Later on Thursday, Tánaiste Simon Harris will hold meetings with the Northern Executive to discuss trade deals with the US.

The focus will be on the possibility of two different tariffs being introduced on the island, which Mr Harris said would cause “significant difficulties” for businesses.

It was recently agreed that most goods exported from the EU to the US will be subject to a 15% tariff.

However, exports from Northern Ireland to the US are subject to a 10 per cent tariff under a separate agreement between the UK and the US.

Talks with northern politicians will take place ahead of a business stakeholders' forum at Government Buildings in Dublin on Friday.

The forum was organised to develop the Republic’s response to the introduction of 15% duties on goods from the EU.

A spokesman for Mr Harris said: “Following the announcement of the reduction in the UK tariff rate to 10 per cent, the Tánaiste will be seeking views from stakeholders on the scale of the problems created by the two different rates.”

Mr Harris is also expected to receive an update on Thursday from the EU's chief trade negotiator, Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič.

They will discuss the European Commission's ongoing work to agree on the final version of the negotiations with the US, as well as the possibility of granting exemptions for certain sectors.
