Man accused of killing great-grandparents in arson attack in Merseyside

A man is charged with responsibility for the death of an elderly couple who died after deliberately setting their home on fire.

Eric Greener, 77, and his wife Sheila Jackson, 83, were killed in a fire at their home in St Helens, Merseyside, in the early hours of July 15.

Merseyside Police said Lee Owens, 46, of no fixed abode, had been charged on Friday with two counts of murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

A 31-year-old man from St Helens who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder remains at large on bail.

An investigation has established that a flammable material was used to start the fire in the house on South John Street, where the couple had lived for fifteen years.

The victims were rescued from the burning building and taken to a medical facility after emergency services were called at 00:40 on July 15.

Mr Greener died on Wednesday evening and Ms Jackson died in hospital on Thursday morning.

In a statement released on Thursday, the family of the victims said they had been the centre of attention and their passing was an irreparable loss that had caused deep pain.

Investigation director Steve McGrath previously described the arson as “outrageous” and “an extremely tragic incident”.
