Lewis Hamilton has admitted he would like to apologise to his team for his exit in the first segment of qualifying at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Hamilton said he needed to apologise to the Ferrari team after he described his two early qualifying crashes at the Belgian Grand Prix as “very bad” and “unacceptable”.

After a disappointing sprint weekend for the seven-time world champion at Spa-Francorchamps, Hamilton failed to make it past the first qualifying session in either of his two races.

On Friday, in the qualifying sprint, the Ferrari driver spun at the end of the final lap and qualified in 18th place.

Then, after finishing 15th in Saturday's short race, Hamilton was eliminated again in main qualifying for Sunday's Grand Prix – this time due to a track restrictions breach at the summit of Eau Rouge on the final lap, which resulted in his seventh fastest time being cancelled by race control.

The loss of his fastest lap left Hamilton in 16th place on Sunday's grid, 13 places behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who made a splash by beating sprint winner Max Verstappen to second behind the dominant McLaren drivers.

A disappointed Hamilton made no excuses for his failures, telling Sky Sports F1 after qualifying: “It was another mistake on my part.

“I really need to look inside myself.

Lewis Hamilton had his lap time disallowed for exceeding the track limit, meaning he was eliminated in the first round of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix.

“I have to apologise to my team as it is simply unacceptable to not get through both Q1s.

“This is a very, very bad performance on my part.”

On his feelings on the car, which had its rear suspension updated this weekend, he said: “We made some changes [for qualifying].

“The car felt good. We even had a tough time because we had to put on a second set [of tyres] to get through the first segment of qualifying.”

Hamilton now faces a tough task to score any points in Sunday's 44-lap race, although the chance of rain on Sunday could improve his chances of success.

“I don't think there's anything we can change [on the car],” said Hamilton, who has started no lower than fourth in his eight previous Belgian Grands Prix.
