Notorious British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who was previously in a relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and is now behind bars, has completed a day and a half of interviews with the US Justice Department, answering questions from “about 100 different people,” according to her lawyer.
“She answered those questions as openly and honestly as she could,” David Oscar Marcus told reporters outside a federal court in Tallahassee, Florida, where Maxwell was meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.
“She never took advantage of anyone or refused to answer questions, and we are very proud of her,” Mr Marcus added.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence and is being held at the federal minimum security prison in Tallahassee.
She was convicted three years ago after pleading guilty to helping Epstein, a wealthy and powerful financier, sexually abuse minors.
Officials say Epstein killed himself in a New York jail while awaiting trial in 2019, but his case continues to generate ongoing scrutiny and conspiracy theories because of his ties to Maxwell and high-profile figures including royalty, presidents and billionaires like Donald Trump.
In a social media post this week, Mr. Blanche said Maxwell would be questioned in connection with President Trump's order to collect and release any credible evidence about others who may have committed crimes.
Mr Trump denies knowing about Epstein's crimes, saying he had long since ended his relationship with him.
Yet he continues to face questions over the Epstein case that overshadow his administration's accomplishments.
On Friday, reporters pressed the Republican president for a pardon for Maxwell, but he deflected the question, emphasizing his administration's successes.
Mr Marcus said Maxwell “answered questions from probably about 100 different people”.
