President Donald Trump has called for a special prosecutor to investigate the 2020 election won by Democrat Joe Biden, repeating his unproven claim that the election was marred by widespread fraud.
“Biden was grossly incompetent and the 2020 election was a complete SCAM!” Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post in which he also attempted to compare his immigration enforcement methods favorably to those of the previous president.
“The evidence is HUGE and OVERWHELMING. A special prosecutor must be appointed. This must not happen again in the United States! It's time to get to work!”
Mr Trump's post, coming as his Republican administration was focused on a major foreign policy decision about whether to intervene in the conflict between Israel and Iran, is part of his efforts to undermine the legitimacy of Mr Biden's presidency.
Earlier this month, Mr Trump ordered his administration to investigate Mr Biden's performance as president, alleging that his aides covered up his predecessor's “cognitive decline.”
Mr Biden called the investigation “a mere distraction.”
The piece also revived Mr. Trump's old grievance that the election was stolen, even though courts across the country, including by Mr. Trump's attorney general in his first term, found no evidence that could have changed the outcome.
The Department of Homeland Security's cybersecurity division declared the election “the most secure in American history.”
