US politician and husband killed in 'targeted' attacks on two Democrats

A man posing as a police officer shot and killed a U.S. government official and her husband in a brazen attack at their home, the state's governor said.

Another Minnesota politician and his wife were also injured in the attacks in the Brooklyn Park and Champlin neighborhoods on Saturday.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the attack as “deliberate political violence.”

Police were searching for the gunman responsible for the attacks on Democratic lawmakers.

Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said recordings found in a fake police car recovered at the scene of one of the attacks named several lawmakers and other officials.

Two people familiar with the situation identified the suspect as 57-year-old Vance Bolter.

They were not authorized to discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Melissa Hortman, former speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and her husband were killed early Saturday morning in their Brooklyn Park home.

A second state politician, Sen. John Hoffman, and his wife were shot multiple times in Champlin.

Officials said the suspect's notes mentioned both Ms. Hortman and Mr. Hoffman.

“During the search of the vehicle, a manifesto was found with the names of many legislators and other officials,” Mr. Bruley said.
