Dawn French Apologizes for 'Mocking Tone' in Israel-Hamas Video

Comedian Dawn French has apologised after posting a video about the conflict between Israel and Hamas, saying she “clumsily used a mocking tone” and the video “felt one-sided”.

The Vicar of Dibley actress posted a video on social media this week in which she changes her normal voice to a higher pitch.

In this video about the conflict, she noted: “A difficult moment, yes, but with nuances,” adding: “In general, no.”

Then at some point she said in a higher voice, “Yes, but you know they did something bad to us.”

Now, French has released a statement on X saying she has removed the video and apologized, stressing that her intention was never to “make fun of, ignore, or minimize the horrors that occurred on October 7, 2023.”

A statement released on Saturday said: “It is important to address this issue.

“I posted the video in the style I use on social media to get an important message across. I awkwardly chose a tongue-in-cheek tone.

“It was NEVER my intention to ridicule, ignore, or minimize the horror that occurred on October 7, 2023, and what continues to unfold in the wake of that brutal, unthinkable, unforgivable, savage attack.

“My heart breaks for the suffering of so many innocent people and their families who have been killed, tortured, raped and kidnapped. The fact that hostages are still being held is absolutely appalling.

“I intended to point out the disgraceful behavior of the brutal leaders of ALL sides of this horrible war, who continue to act like the worst, dangerous, disgusting bullies and seem to enjoy the tyrannical and childish superiority of violence. THEY were my target, but obviously I failed to get it across, and that is my fault. I apologize unconditionally. I am especially sorry that my disgust for Hamas was not clear. It seemed one-sided, and that is wrong.

“I am a person who, like many others, feels increasingly helpless and hopeless as I watch the carnage and destruction escalate. Images of starving and wounded children haunt me day and night. History teaches us to never stand by and allow such inhuman violence to happen to anyone, especially innocent children.

“I felt that my silence was complicity or even approval in some way. So in my humble way, I wanted to express my desire to say NO – to BOTH sides – to any further violence.

“I hope you understand that I did not mean to offend anyone, but obviously it did. For which I sincerely apologize and have deleted the video.”
