Israeli strikes in northern Gaza kill at least 46, officials say

At least 46 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in the northern Gaza Strip, according to local medical services.

Fifteen people from one family, including five women and two children, were killed in a strike on a residential building on Monday, according to Shifa Hospital.

Earlier, Gaza's Health Ministry said at least 31 people were killed in an attack on a school that had been converted into a shelter in Gaza City.

Fahmi Awada, head of the ministry's emergency services, said the strike on a school in northern Gaza also left more than 55 people injured.

He added that the school had been attacked three times while people were sleeping and their belongings had caught fire. Videos circulating online showed rescuers trying to put out the fire and recovering charred remains.

The Israeli military said the target of the attack was a militant command center located inside the school that Hamas and Islamic Jihad had used to gather intelligence to prepare attacks.

Israel blames Hamas for the civilian deaths because its operations are taking place in residential areas.

Israel resumed its military operations in March after a truce with Hamas ended. It has vowed to take control of Gaza and continue fighting until Hamas is destroyed or disarmed and the remaining 58 hostages, a third of whom are believed to be alive, are returned from the October 7, 2023, attack that triggered the war.

More than half of the hostages were returned under ceasefire or other agreements, eight people were rescued and Israeli forces found the remains of dozens more.

Israel's counter-offensive has killed some 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. It says more than half the dead are women and children, but does not differentiate between civilians and militants in its tally.
