Morgan Gibbs-White dedicates Taiwo Awoniyi's goal that gave Forest victory over West Ham

Morgan Gibbs-White dedicated his goal against West Ham to teammate Taiwo Awoniyi as Nottingham Forest kept their Champions League chances alive with a 2-1 win.

The Reds captain held Awoniyi's shirt up to the stands after scoring the opening goal of the first half.

Striker Awoniyi is recovering from emergency abdominal surgery while in an induced coma after colliding with the goalpost in last weekend's Premier League home win over Leicester.

Forest players warmed up wearing shirts with Awoniyi's name and the number nine on the back, and the words “We are all with you Taiwo” emblazoned on the front.

Nikola Milenkovic scored a controversial second and although Jarrod Bowen produced a spectacular volley back, Forest, already confident of European football next season, were left challenging Chelsea for the fifth and final Champions League spot on the final day.

West Ham, with their ambitions low after a disappointing season, almost took the lead in the second minute when Vladimir Koufal, who along with Aaron Cresswell was playing his last home game for the club, passed to Tomas Soucek, whose header was saved by Mats Sels.

Koufal, who has never scored for West Ham in 179 games, almost broke the goal with a deflected shot but it was saved by Sels.

At the other end of the pitch, Alphonse Areola blocked a point-blank shot from Gibbs-White and kept out a shot from Chris Wood.

However, a terrible mistake by Areola gave Forest their first goal, which came from a West Ham free-kick.

Max Kilman passed to the French goalkeeper, who accidentally passed straight to Gibbs-White, who easily slotted the ball into an empty net.

There was a worrying moment for West Ham when Bowen attempted to tackle the ball on the goal line and hit the goal
