Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal can 'do something special' in Paris return leg

Mikel Arteta is confident Arsenal can create a unique opportunity to turn around their first-leg defeat at Paris Saint-Germain and reach the Champions League final.

Arsenal travel to Paris next week trailing by a goal in the semi-finals after Ousmane Dembele stunned the Emirates with a fourth-minute strike.

Although Mikel Merino's second-half goal was ruled out for offside, PSG substitute Gonzalo Ramos hit the crossbar of David Raya's goal in the dying minutes and Arteta's men will be lucky to secure a draw.

However, Arteta said: “We are at half-time and my message is the same as after the 3-0 win against Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarter-final. We have to come to Paris and win and we are more than capable of doing that.”

“To win the Champions League final you have to do something special and we will have to do something special in Paris to get there. We still have a lot of opportunities to get to that final.”

Arsenal enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win over PSG in October but Luis Enrique's new-look side came out of the blocks on Tuesday night and dominated much of the first half.

Arteta revealed he had to change his tactical strategy (though he would not reveal how) midway through the first half and Arsenal improved their performance, with Gabriel Martinelli forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into a save and then Merino heading in just 90 seconds after his goal was disallowed by VAR.

Leandro Trossard tested Donnarumma again but Bradley Barcola almost added a second for the visitors with 10 minutes remaining when his shot was just wide and Ramos hit the woodwork of Raya's goal.

“We had two one-on-ones with Donnarumma and if they had been successful it would have been a different story,” Arteta added. “But he made great saves and that's the difference in the Champions League. The difference is so small and it didn't do us any good.”
