Pope Francis spent a busy final day celebrating Easter and meeting with J.D. Vance

Pope Francis spent a busy final day of Easter celebrations, greeting crowds in St Peter's Square and meeting with US Vice President J.D. Vance.

On Sunday morning, he left the hospital to bless thousands of people in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, giving them a surprise ride around the square in the popemobile.

The 88-year-old pontiff paused from time to time to bless the babies brought to him, saying: “Brothers and sisters, happy Easter.”

The pontiff handed over the celebration of Easter Mass to another cardinal, but after it was over he appeared on the balcony of the loggia above the entrance to the basilica and remained there for more than 20 minutes, when the Urbi et Orbi blessing was recited.

On his way to the basilica, Francis met briefly with Mr. Vance, who was celebrating Easter in Rome with his family.

The Pope received Mr. Vance in one of the reception rooms of the Vatican hotel where he was staying and presented the Catholic vice-president with three large chocolate Easter eggs for Mr. Vance's three young children, who were not there, as well as a Vatican tie and rosary beads.
