A gunman opened fire at the University of Florida, killing two people and wounding at least six, police said.
Authorities say the suspected shooter is the 20-year-old son of a sheriff's deputy whose former service weapon was used in the incident.
Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbauer said the two victims were not students at the university, but the shooter appeared to be a student there.
Five victims are being treated at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, and the suspected shooter is also receiving medical attention, Mr. Trumbauer said.
Mr Trumbauer said the shooting happened around 11:50 a.m. Thursday when a gunman opened fire on people around the student union building.
Tallahassee Memorial Hospital confirmed it has six patients being treated, one of whom is in critical condition.
Mr. Trumbauer said information about the victims, including their status as students, would not be released.
However, he confirmed that the two dead were not university students.
Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil has revealed the identity of the alleged shooter and his connection to Deputy Jessica Ichner, who has been with the sheriff's office for more than 18 years.
Mr. McNeil said the alleged shooter was a longtime member of the sheriff's office youth advisory council and had attended several educational programs run by the office.
“This is certainly a heinous crime,” Mr McNeil said.
“We will do everything we can to hold those responsible accountable and send a message that this type of behavior will never be tolerated here in Leon County and, dare I say it, across the state and country.”
Asked about the shooting, US President Donald Trump said: “It's a disgrace,” adding that he “knows the school and the area well.”
