Cable car accident in southern Italy kills at least four

A cable car carrying tourists in southern Italy has collapsed after a cable snapped, killing at least four people and seriously injuring one, local authorities said.

On Thursday, a broken cable stopped both the ascending and descending cable cars as they passed over Monte Faito in the town of Castellammare di Stabia, located between the famous tourist sites of Pompeii and Sorrento.

The cable car incident resulted in deaths and injuries, and eight tourists and an operator were rescued from the descending cable car, Naples Prefect Michele De Bari said.

“The traction cable broke. The emergency brake downstream was activated, but apparently the one in the cabin heading to the station did not,” said Castellammare Mayor Luigi Vicinanza.

Italian mountain rescue services, firefighters, police and civil services arrived at the scene.
