Ecuadorian citizens have voted in the second round of presidential elections, which has become a tight battle between incumbent President Daniel Noboa and leftist lawyer Luisa González.
After polling stations closed, election officials said voter turnout was more than 80% and planned to release preliminary results later.
Mr. Noboa, a young conservative millionaire, and Ms. González promised voters solutions to the extortion, murder, kidnapping and other crimes that have become part of everyday life as the country emerges from the pandemic.
Experts expect the results of the vote on Sunday to be very close.
It was the second presidential election in less than two years in the South American nation, where voting is compulsory. Voters chose Mr Noboa over Ms González in a second round of snap elections in October 2023.
The candidates entered Sunday's round of voting with the most votes in the first round, which took place in February. Mr. Noboa received 44.17% of the vote, while Ms. González received 44%. They were separated by about 17,000 votes.
