It is no longer the traffic police, but the prevention police who are at the forefront of officers charged with committing crimes. The leaky sieve and the hiring of almost everyone into service have taken their revenge – we read in Thursday's “Rzeczpospolita”.
The daily reports that nearly 1,100 crimes were committed by officers of the country's largest uniformed service, and almost one in three involved corruption.
He emphasizes that among the suspects there are only 20 policemen charged with “road service.”
However, the leaders are uniformed prevention officers who commit crimes – as stated in the report of the Police Internal Affairs Office for 2024, analyzed by “Rzeczpospolita”.
“In prevention, we have new recruits who have been through a leaky verification sieve. Even during basic training, it turned out that there were many cases of drug use and breaking discipline. You can't turn weak candidates into good police officers. They will make mistakes and take bribes,” said Tomasz Safjański, former deputy head of the Criminal Intelligence Bureau of the Police Headquarters and professor at the WSB Academy, as quoted by “Rz”.
The author of the text emphasizes that the report presents a fragment of reality, because it only concerns abuses detected by a unit in the Police that tracks down “black sheep” in the formation.
According to the report, 291 police officers were to commit 1,097 crimes – that is 22 suspects less than in 2023. Nevertheless, as we read, there were significantly more prohibited acts (650 a year earlier).
As “Rz” explains, ” the statistics were boosted by a police officer who carried out unauthorized checks on the so-called drum, i.e. in police databases, 100 times and shared his knowledge with outsiders, and two other officers who swept as many as 316 cases (verification and preparatory proceedings) +under the carpet+, not taking action”.
According to the daily, “crimes +against the activities of state institutions and local government+ dominated” (they concerned over 700 of the nearly 1,100 charges).
Every third abuse was related to corruption , but – as the author states – in a veiled form – abuse of office in order to gain financial or personal benefits – over 70 percent of corruption offences had this form. (PAP)
