Speed cameras to be fixed. You will either point out the culprit or lose your registration certificate

According to the government, avoiding a ticket after being caught speeding will end. If you do not admit to the offense or do not indicate the perpetrator, you will be blacklisted and lose your registration certificate – writes Monday's “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”.

“A large proportion of drivers caught by a speed camera for exceeding the speed limit now avoid punishment. Last year, out of 1.169 million detected violations in this regard, fines were issued over 568 thousand times. A huge number of drivers avoid punishment, among other things, because they delay paying the fine or indicate fictitious persons as the perpetrators, e.g. citizens of Ukraine. In the case of foreigners – citizens of the Union in 2024, fines were issued to only 6% of drivers caught. In the case of citizens of non-EU countries, this percentage was slightly over 2%,” we read in “DGP”.

As reported, “the government intends to tighten this system”. “The scheme will be as follows: we register a violation and in the course of the proceedings, with good cooperation from the vehicle owner, we have three months to: impose a ticket on the driver, impose a ticket on the owner for failure to indicate, submit a motion to court or issue a warning,” Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Stanisław Bukowiec told “DGP”.

He admitted that if the case ends with one of the above decisions within those three months, it will be considered closed. “If it fails, then after those three months the vehicle ends up on a blacklist and will be visible to all control services,” Bukowiec noted in the daily.

The article explains that “being put on the blacklist will require the vehicle's registration certificate to be seized during a road check; in such cases, the police will have to tow the car to the parking lot,” it added. (PAP)
