Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimares hopes to see 'tears of happiness' at Wembley

Bruno Guimaraes will make no apology for shedding tears of joy if Newcastle United beat Liverpool in the League Cup final on Sunday to finally end their trophy drought.

The 27-year-old Brazilian's tears on the Wembley pitch after defeat to Manchester United at the same stage of the competition two years ago were emblematic of the emotions of the day for a club that had not won a major trophy since 1969 and last lifted one of the country's major trophies 14 years ago.

This time he will take to the field with the captain's armband and is determined to put the misfortunes of that day behind him.

Guimarães noted: “This time I want to cry with happiness. Everyone knows how emotional I am, I always try to give 100% on the pitch and play like a real fan, because I understand what it means to them.”

“I remember that moment, and next time I would like to cry with joy, and I hope that on that day everything will be good for us.”

The 2023 final will be the Magpies' first visit to the stadium since 2000, when Sir Bobby Robson's side lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final.

Rob Lee, whose header equalised that day, briefly gave his side hope by remaining the last player to score for the club at Wembley and Guimaraes will hope some of that good fortune will rub off on him, although he may not have touched that part of his body.

Guimarães said with a smile: “We had a chat with Rob Lee, who was the last player to score at Wembley for Newcastle. I touched his leg to give me a bit of luck and hopefully I can do the same on the pitch.”

Newcastle could certainly use some luck as they look to beat Liverpool for the first time in 17 attempts, with some suggesting the club are cursed by their recent lack of trophies.
