The captain of a Russian container ship that collided with a US oil tanker in the North Sea has been produced in court and remanded in custody.

Vladimir Motin, 59, from Primorsky Krai, St Petersburg, Russia, captain of the Solong, appeared at Hull Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning charged with manslaughter through negligence.

Motin stood in a boarded-up dock during the 35-minute hearing, which discussed how his ship collided with the US tanker Stena Immaculate off the east coast of Yorkshire on Monday.

The court also heard that all 23 people on board the tanker had been rescued, as well as 13 crew members from the Solong, but 38-year-old Filipino national Mark Angelo Pernia remained missing.

No application for bail was made and Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram, who participated in the trial via video link, ordered Motin to remain in custody.

No applications were received.
