Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could not be more pleased.

“Increase your beef tallow consumption,” read a March 1 tweet that’s now pinned to the top of Steak ’n Shake’s 𝕏 account. “How about free fries with every Tesla purchase!?!” read another. The Indianapolis fast-food joint had no misconceptions about its new approach during Trump’s second term — it fully embraced Kennedy’s call to fry its fries in beef tallow instead of vegetable oil, and it implemented it immediately.

In an interview with Fox and Friends last week, Steak 'n Shake COO Daniel Edwards said the company had long considered switching to beef-fat fries. “We've actually been thinking about it for a while,” Edwards told the publication. “Our owner, my boss, is a guy named Sardar Biglari. He called me one day and said, 'Why should the fries that Europeans eat be better than the fries that Americans eat?'

Edwards recalled a meeting in which Biglari remarked that he preferred the French fries he had as a child in Belgium, which set off a chain reaction that prompted the company to seek a supplier who could meet the production requirements: “We finally found a supplier who could do it for us, and he said, ‘We have to do it, we have to do it everywhere.’ So we did. We applied to RFK for our French fries.”

Kennedy has long advocated for fast-food chains to cook their French fries in beef tallow, citing rising obesity rates in the U.S. And while the American Heart Association says there is “no reason” to avoid French fries cooked in vegetable oil, Kennedy calls beef tallow a healthier, more nutritious choice than common vegetable oils like soybean and canola.

In an October post on his Instagram page, Kennedy called vegetable oils “the most harmful ingredients in our food.”

“The reason they’re in food is because they’re highly subsidized and cheap,” Kennedy said during an appearance on Fox News. “But they’re linked to a lot of serious health conditions, including inflammation throughout the body, which affects our health. It’s one of the worst things you can eat, and it’s almost impossible to avoid, if you’re eating any processed food, you’re going to be eating vegetable oils.”

The adoption of the MAGA pet bill has received a flurry of support from conservatives, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), who called on “every fast food chain in America” to follow Steak 'n Shake’s lead. 𝕏 owner Elon Musk said the new fries “taste so much better,” and Steak 'n Shake quickly invited its car company Tesla to install electric vehicle charging stations outside its restaurants.

“More fast food chains should follow suit,” Ohio Rep. Nick Santucci wrote in response to the beef tallow news. “Americans deserve real ingredients and traditional cooking methods in the food they eat!”
