Member of the Board FIFA Constants Omari arrested on charges of corruption in the Congo

Attempts by FIFA to regain its credibility received a further blow when it was revealed that the Congolese Federation of football Association (FECOFA) the President, constant Omari was arrested on corruption charges in Kinshasa.

Omari also Vice-President of the African football Confederation and is a member of the Council of the all-powerful FIFA with 2015.

The most powerful man in football in the democratic Republic of Congo Omari was arrested late Tuesday night along with two other officials of the FECOFA, Theobald Binamungu and chief financial officer Roger Bondembe and the Secretary-General on sport Barthelemy Okito.

Local sources suggest the fifth person, the President of the Congo Olympic Committee, also wanted, but on the run and the investigation refers to more than £700,000 (€803,539) of public funds, which were intended to pay the matches involving the national team and clubs in European competitions.

In response to the arrests, the national League of Congo, Linafoot, took a dramatic decision to suspend the championship.

In a statement on its web site, said Linafoot of the Quartet were questioned “the office of the special adviser to the President on combating corruption, Luzolo Bambi”.

He added that the detainees “are suspected of embezzlement of funds intended for football teams in the DRC”.
