Irish photographer says, 2nd place in world press sports photo of the year

Irish photographer Stephen McCarthy was awarded 2nd prize in world press sports photo of the year awards.

Sportsfile photographer was announced in February, as nominee for his photo with British and Irish lions clash with the Maori all blacks in 2017.

McCarthy took the prize at the awards ceremony in Amsterdam last night.

Photos called ‘Steamer Scramble’ – shows two sets of forwards Packed down with steam rising from their backs.

McCarthy took to Twitter to comment on the award, saying: “dreams come through”.

Speaking on the Sportsfile website it, McCarthy said: “it’s a huge honor to be recognized among some of the best photographers in the world.”

Wins photography, Oliver Scarff’s Royal Shrovetide Football, featuring players fighting for the ball in the annual Royal football match on Shrove Tuesday, which takes place in Derbyshire, UK.

The game features hundreds of participants in the two teams ‘up and vniz ards ards – with goals scored by ‘knocking the ball three times on a mill stone set the posts three miles apart.’
