Chelsea transfer news and rumours: Summer transfer window 2022

Wrapping up the Chelsea transfer news, rumours and gossip in the 2022 summer window.

RB Leipzig confident on Werner return

RB Leipzig are growing increasingly confident they can agree a deal to re-sign Timo Werner from Chelsea.

Talks between the two clubs are running ‘at full speed’ and the Bundesliga club are exploring all possibilities, whether it be a loan or permanent deal.

Chelsea signed the 26-year-old two years ago from Leipzig, but he has been unable to replicate the goalscoring form which prompted the Blues to activate his £47.7m release clause.

Werner is said to be keen on the move as he wants to get regular game time to secure a starting spot in Hansi Flick’s Germany team at the World Cup in November.

His relationship with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is also said to be an issue, although Tuchel is understood to be unwilling to let the forward leave.

Juventus are also interested in Werner if they can’t wrap up a deal for main target Alvaro Morata, according to Sky in Italy.

Chelsea in advanced talks to sign £50m Cucurella

Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella and are willing to pay the £50m asking price for the Manchester City target.

The Spaniard handed in a transfer request on Friday in a bid to push through a move to City but the Premier League champions will not pay Brighton’s asking price, with Chelsea now in pole position to sign the 24-year-old.

The west London club have indicated they will pay three-quarters of his salary, with discussions centring around a number of bonuses that Chelsea are asking for as part of the deal.

Napoli are currently reluctant to pay them and intermediaries involved in the deal are working to find a solution.

Inter midfielder Casadei on Tuchel wishlist

Chelsea want to sign Inter Milan’s talented young midfielder Cesare Casadei.

The west London club have proposed paying between £5m and £7m for the 19-year-old, who has not yet played in Serie A, Sky in Italy say.

However, they describe Casadei as the “absolute protagonist” of the Inter youth team’s Primavera Scudetto victory last season, and he is considered one of the most important talents in the Italy youth setup.

They are therefore not inclined to agree to such a fee to sell the U19 international.

Tuchel a ‘little bit’ annoyed at Barca’s Azpilicueta pursuit

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has admitted he is a “little bit” annoyed with Barcelona over their pursuit of Cesar Azpilicueta.

The 32-year-old has 12 months remaining on his Chelsea contract and has reportedly asked to leave the club after a decade at Stamford Bridge to return to his native Spain with Barcelona.

But Tuchel says he is not sure if he wants to give Azpilicueta “what he wants”, and believes Barca have undervalued the defender, comparing his value to that of recent Chelsea capture Kalidou Koulibaly, who signed for £33m from Napoli earlier this month.

When asked at the Universal Orlando Resort, if he has been annoyed by Barca’s pursuit of Azpilicueta, Tuchel replied: “Maybe a little bit.”

Asked about the Spaniard’s future, Tuchel said: “It’s a tough question because I am not sure if I want to give Azpi what he wants.

“At some point it is about what we want. I just made the comparison about how much we fought for Koulibaly, who is a national team player and roughly the same age.

“He is a hugely important player for Napoli but we have a Spanish international who is the captain at Chelsea. I see him maybe at the same level but Barcelona don’t see him on that level. So I am not sure if I want to give him what he wants as he is a huge player.

“We don’t think so much about other clubs. The focus is on us and what we need. I said that to him and I say it to you that I understand on a personal and a career level. But I am not only in this role to give him what he wants. I am a manager for Chelsea who wants to do what’s best for Chelsea.

“He doesn’t like it but he understands. It is tough for him because the other club is permanently on him. On September 1 when things calm down, then he can play on his highest level.”

Chelsea interested in Leicester’s Fofana

Chelsea are interested in signing Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana.

Fofana signed a two-year contract extension with Leicester in March. His deal runs until 2027.

Chelsea have signed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and have made attempts to bring in Manchester City’s Nathan Ake and Jules Kounde from Sevilla, who has joined Barcelona, following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Tuchel expects Broja to stay

Thomas Tuchel has played down talk that Armando Broja is set to leave Chelsea on loan this summer.

Broja excelled during a loan spell last season at Southampton but the indications are he will form part of Tuchel’s plans this term.

“I don’t expect him to leave,” Tuchel continued. “I’m aware of the offers and aware of the interest. We will make a decision together, the owner and me and the player.

“When he arrived it was clear he is trying to impress and become a Chelsea player.”

Ake ‘to remain at Man City’ amid Chelsea interest

Manchester City defender Nathan Ake is reportedly to remain at the club this summer as Chelsea suffered another blow to their hopes of defensive reinforcements.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein claims City were never intending to sell the Netherlands international unless his valuation was met.

The player is said to be pleased to be remaining with the Premier League champions with his versatility deemed to be crucial to his status as an important member of Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad.

The Athletic say Chelsea’s interest was never substantiated by an offer that suited City.

The report also claims Chelsea will turn their attentions to PSG centre-back Presnel Kimpembe with the two clubs in talks.

Conor Gallagher has scored eight goals and earned a call-up to the senior England squad in his loan season at Crystal Palace.

Conor Gallagher is aiming to be a key player for Premier League side Chelsea after being assured of a place in manager Thomas Tuchel’s plans.

The midfielder, who played for Crystal Palace on loan last season, has yet to play a game for Chelsea, fanning speculation about the 22-year-old’s future.

“[Tuchel] said he wants me to be part of the squad and to prove myself in pre-season, so that’s the plan,” Gallagher told the BBC.

“It’s what I wanted to hear, it was a nice phone call that we had and it gave me a clear plan of pre-season and where I’m going to be. It was great to hear.”

Gallagher, who has earned four caps for England and made his debut against San Marino last year, was a pillar of Patrick Vieira’s Palace last season, scoring eight goals in 38 games to be named Player of the Season by the team’s supporters. Gallagher’s Chelsea contract runs to 2025.

“Everyone wants to play as much as they can, but I’m willing to work as hard as I can to be on the pitch as much as possible,” he said.

“There are world-class players in the squad and it’s obviously a tough team to get into but I feel like if that challenge is there, I think I’d be a bit silly not to take it.”
