Two British tourists among four killed in cable car crash in southern Italy

Two British travellers have died in a cable car accident near Naples.

Italian news agency Ansa, citing Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, reported that two Britons and an Israeli citizen were among the four victims of the crash that occurred on Thursday on Monte Faito in Castellammare di Stabia.

According to preliminary data, a traction cable broke, which led to the suspension of the cable cars.

A fifth victim, believed to be a tourist from abroad, sustained serious injuries during the incident.

Several people were evacuated from another cable car.

Italian prosecutors have reportedly opened an investigation into multiple manslaughter and the crash with the perpetrator.

In a social media post, Campania regional president Vincenzo De Luca described the day as “truly tragic and painful,” adding that his thoughts were with the victims, the injured and their loved ones.

He expressed gratitude to the rescue services and said that a full investigation would be carried out.

The mayor of Castellammare, Luigi Vicinanza Sindaco, announced via Facebook that a day of mourning would be declared and that all events related to Easter celebrations would be cancelled.

He added that a minute of silence would be held on Friday in memory of the victims.

Firefighters, police and Italian mountain rescue teams rushed to the scene, which is located between the popular tourist destinations of Pompeii and Sorrento.

EAV, the company that operates the cable car, said service had resumed a week ago with all necessary safety measures in place.

Investigators are checking the cable car and one possible cause of the incident could be strong winds.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offered her condolences from Washington, DC, where she met with US President Donald Trump.

One of the British tourists said that after the incident she watched as people were evacuated from one of the cable car cabins using a safety system.

Megan Pacey, 50, from London, was with her husband James Ross and their two children, 10-year-old Hannah and eight-year-old son Luke, when they saw the suspended zip line.
