Trump to deliver West Point commencement address

United States President Donald Trump will deliver his first commencement address for military personnel after returning to duty.

The Republican president will address graduates of the West Point military academy on Saturday morning in New York state.

Mr. Trump already delivered the commencement address at West Point in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his speech, the US president urged graduates to “never forget” the soldiers who fought in the war for slavery, at a time when the country was reconciling its history on race following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Mr. Trump also expressed respect for the military academy's history and its famous alumni, such as Douglas MacArthur and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The ceremony five years ago attracted significant attention as the military academy brought graduates home from work due to COVID-19 to return to the region that had become the epicenter of the pandemic.

Earlier this month, Mr. Trump visited Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to address graduates of the University of Alabama.

His comments were a mix of traditional graduation platitudes and advice with political attacks on predecessor Joe Biden, musings on transgender athletes and false claims about the 2020 election.

Vice President J.D. Vance addressed graduating seniors at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Friday.

Mr Vance said in his address that Mr Trump wants American soldiers to be sent with clear goals, rather than into “vague missions” and “open conflicts” as they have been in the past.
