Pope Leo has criticized the rise of nationalist political movements around the world, calling for reconciliation and dialogue in line with his promise to make the Catholic Church an embodiment of peace.
The Pope celebrated Mass on Sunday in St Peter's Square before thousands of worshippers and called on the Holy Spirit to “break down barriers and destroy the walls of indifference and hatred.”
He noted: “Where love reigns, there is no place for prejudices, ‘safe zones’ that separate us from our neighbours, and exclusive thinking, which, unfortunately, we also see in political nationalism.”
He did not mention specific countries or politicians.
Leo also recalled the words of the late Pope Francis, who on the Feast of Pentecost in May 2023 noted that in our world “we are all connected, but at the same time we find ourselves cut off from one another, paralyzed by indifference and oppressed by loneliness.”
The Pope also condemned wars that “tear our world apart” and invoked the Holy Spirit for the “gift of peace.”
He told the believers: “First of all, peace in our hearts, because only a peaceful heart can spread peace in the family, society and international relations.”
He then prayed for reconciliation and dialogue wherever there is conflict in the world.
Soon after his election as pope, Leo vowed to work for unity and peace. His first message, “Peace be with you all,” defined the central importance of peace as a fundamental pillar of his papacy.
He also called for a genuine and just peace in Ukraine and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
