Israel launches airstrikes in Yemen a day after Houthi rebels hit airport

Israel's military says it has carried out airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen's Red Sea city of Hodeida, just a day after Iran-backed forces fired a missile that hit Israel's main airport.

Rebel officials said the United States and Israel carried out at least six attacks on the key port of Hodeida on Monday afternoon.

According to the Houthis, other strikes targeted a cement factory in the Bajil area of Hodeidah province.

The Israeli military noted that more than 20 Israeli fighter jets took part in the operation, which dropped more than 50 munitions on multiple targets.

A rocket attack by Iranian rebels in Yemen on Sunday temporarily suspended flights and commuter trains at Israel's main international airport, leaving four people with minor injuries.

It was the first time a rocket had hit an Israeli airport since the conflict began.

The Houthis claim the strikes were the result of a joint Israeli-US operation.

However, a US defence official said American troops were not involved in Israeli strikes in Yemen on Monday.

The strikes were not part of Operation Rough Rider, the ongoing US military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen aimed at preventing attacks on shipping in the Red Sea that began on March 15.
